This Now This
Sponn approached me for some album artwork, we ended up with an expreimental short.
Before learning the name of the contemporary jazz track, my first impression of the music was a feeling of chaotic evolution, one thing turning into another in unexpected ways. I wanted this to be the foundation of the artwork's concept so, naturally, one piece of artwork being made into another seemed like the way to move forward. This, now this.
After congratulating Sponn on the aptly titled track, planning proceeded. I wanted to take a spontaneous approach to the artwork, so rather than a solid plan, it was more of a decision to use materials that become progressively more difficult to rework. Aside from knowing I wanted to start and end on a portrait of the artist, the rest was improvisation.
Just before I got going, Sponn suggested it might be interesting to record the process. I agreed.
A week or so later, we landed on the artwork below, a composition of every piece of artwork created in the process, and the music video below. Further down are a few higher-resolution renders of some of my favourite pieces. There are many artworks that, due to the creation of each new piece being the destruction of the previous, now only exist in the overlaid section towards the end of the film.
Which I am quite happy about.
